Hunting Tips | Rifles and Cartridges

Check zero every year

Don't assume your scope is zeroed in exactly like it was the previous year. Go to the target range and shoot at least one shot, three would be better, and see where you are hitting. If you are shooting off, make your adjustments and shoot again. Do this until you are hitting the target where you want to. You should also re-check your point of impact if you drop your rifle or fall on it.

Clean barrel

A finger cut from a latex glove stretched over the end of your barrel will work well to keep rain, snow and other debris out of your barrel.

Emergency gun oil

If you ever get caught in the rain or snow, and need rifle protection and you forgot to bring your gun oil, try this trick. Take the oil dipstick from your vehicle's engine, and smear the oil from it on your gun metal. If you require more oil, just dip it again. This will allow protection until you return home to properly clean and oil down your gun.

Keep the junk out

Keep rain, snow, mud and dirt out of your barrel by putting a piece of tape over the end of it. The tape will keep junk out of your barrel and when you shoot the escaping gasses will blow the tape away before the bullet gets to it. The tape will not affect your accuracy.

Preventing gun rust

When returning from a hunt you should always oil your shotgun, pistol or rifle before you put it away, especially if you have encountered any moisture along the way. All you need is some type of gun lubricant, if possible use a scent free gun lubricant. Always be thinking about a deer's keen sense of smell. Spray it on a soft cloth or on a clean patch and wipe the gun down. Make sure you get all the metal including the inside of the barrel. This will prevent the gun from rusting and keep it in top working condition.
